Friday, July 28, 2006 Diplomacy Those who know me well enough would see me as a moderately diplomatic person. My words may be straight, cutting and sharp at times, but mostly i give people chances when my first impression of them is rock bottom, just as i hope others can give me chances. However, things are getting abit far that for the first time, i'm actually thinking of dropping diplomacy. First, i wish to touch on this little issue called respect. Respect between people is essential. But respect is to be gained. If you wish for others to show you respect, then you have to show others respect. In addition, you have to earn the respect. You do not come in on day 1 and start showing utter disregard for the existing members. You do not do that if you wish to have a proper work environment. However, some people just don't understand this. Respect is inconsequential of your family background. After all, the money is your father's, not yours. Respect is also inconsequential of how well you can twist and use words. Bombastic language is pointless. You can confuse some, but never underestimate others around you. You may be able to fool others to your advantage, but there are eyes on you, and not all eyes are as gullible. If you wish for others to welcome you, you have to give due respect. Else, diplomacy fails. Next, i would like to mention briefly about being grateful. Sometimes, people take things for granted. It's alright to do so, but make sure one realises the fortunate circumstances that he is in soon enough, before things change. You have been lucky enough to enter paradise, yet you try to establish yourself as king of paradise the day you enter. Oh yes, you are full of confidence, and you can speak really really well, after all, you boast that you were a great contender in saliva fights. Well, troubles usually originate from your mouth. And as i have mentioned, not all people are gullible enough to be hoodwinked by your forked tongue. Back to the main point, do not be an ingrate for the great environment that you have been put in, and do not immediately overstep your boundaries. Else, diplomacy fails. And i would like to point out kindly that sarcasm is not really apt and appreciated when you have already not shown respect, furthermore walking with your nose so high your snot can be seen. Sarcasm, may be met with a boring response, definitely not worth you precious time, but sarcasm will prove to be a great trigger. Giving you chances, only to have those chances burned by your sarcasm, is actually the stupidest method you can do to harm yourself. Remember, when people give you chances, don't take them for granted. Else, diplomacy fails. I may be about to leave soon, but i do not feel terribly at ease at leaving what has become more of a passion, to a person whom acts like what i have described above. What is more pathetic, is that this person is thriving like a parasite upon the good name that my predecessors have worked hard and put in effort to build up. Others may think we are prejudiced against this person, but if it was prejudice, we'd be fully aware. Hopefully this person changes for the better, and becomes worthy of more chances. The fact that i am writing this down, yet not taking action, is proof of my generosity in giving chances. I may not produce the best, but i do know that in many social environments, you cannot live with just high quality work, which i must say, said person has not proven himself to be capable of doing so. The atmosphere has changed, and i do not like it one bit. I do not wish to leave, with problems unresolved, because once i am part of something, i will always have a responsibility to see over it and ensure its success. No way will i gladly leave this in a person of such mediocre calibre. Things do not look good when they are ugly. I am leaving soon enough, but i do not wish to say, "Since i am leaving soon, why should i care what happens next?" Sunday, July 23, 2006 The Turquiose Room Then we decided to try the desserts. There were 5 special desserts apart from the gelato. We ordered the Tiramisu, Chocolate mousse, Apple crumble, Brownie. We left out this Cafe Boheme, which seemed to be a rip off. Coffee liquer in a chocolate cup...around 15 cc.....not worth it... The brownie crumbles and tasted chockfull of good chocolate. This also came with gelato. Very rich chocolate paired with nuts. Well, the service is rather friendly and the staff are clear with their menu. They will happily introduce their wares, and repeat all the funky italian names of the hidden menu items to you, and also make recommendations or even telling you whether the food suits you, as in the case of the Cafe Boheme. Good place to chill and have wine or beer. Another nice getaway from the city, with such an elusive location. Don't drive. you will have a hard time manoevrering the twisty hilly small roads and finding parking. And, if you drink, don't drive. Price: 6.5/10 About the same as a mid-high end italian restaurant. Touted as One Rochester at sane prices. The alcs are generally at more reasonable prices. Location: 1/10 Worse than Rochester. Located opposite NOL building along Alexandra road, and near to the new site of River Valley High. Even then, it's easy to miss it. Ambience: 8/10 Simplistic, nice lighting that's calming. Address: 7 Lock Road. Buses available are 51, 61, 97, 100. Go find out where RV High is. Then when you reach the school gate, keep walking upwards, keeping an eye on your right. Wednesday, July 12, 2006 Random Road Sights... I see... THAT'S why you chose Vitagen Less Sugar, the Healthier Choice ain't it? What about the additional benefits? I think she liked those more... WOW! I've got Kaya on my nose! It looks delicious... Look kids! Uncle Ronald wet his pants with Baron's Strong Brew...and he's looking really happy about it! The Slacker's car is capable of Hyperspace travel...Sunday, July 09, 2006 Island Creamery On a balmy Saturday morning, yes morning, the slacker, ali and me agreed to go out for ice cream. It was a complicated morning. The original plan was that we go to Island creamery at serene centre along Dunearn Rd, to have ice cream, then Slacker said he preferred Gelare, so the location was changed to Causeway Point. I was at Orchard, on my way to Causeway point by MRT when he called and say meet at Island Creamery which was my reccomendation, something i enjoyed since HC days and which brings back memories. So, i was at Orchard at 11.10am, and suddenly the venue changed to Serene Centre at 12.30pm! It took me less than half an hour to reach Serene Centre, and i was left baking under the sun waiting for those 2... who finally arrived at 12.15 and 12.30pm. ANYWAY, we went into the shop. It had been renovated into a real cafe style shop, truly deserving of the term 'creamery' The lighting was mild and soft, as reflected in my photos, and the dark red and cream colour scheme was very warm and rich, just like the ice cream. Rich Slacker was surprisingly generous and treated us to double scoops each! This shop specialises in creamy flavours, and therefore the flavours are usually thick, rich and NOT fat free. But who cares. For people like me, engineered to eat, I can eat as much fat as i like and not get fat...ENVY ME MUAHAHA Their variety is different from time to time, with a few of the standards. Here is a list of the flavours available that day: Soursop (unusual, they usually don't do juicy fruits), Banana, Horlicks, Teh Tarik, ReversO (chocolate chip), Apple Pie, Nutella, Kahlua Latte, and some other unusual stuff. Slacker chose Banana and Horlicks, Ali, of course chose Teh Tarik (being a M'sian i guess...) and Nutella and i chose the Apple Pie and Kahlua Latte. All the flavour were rich and Ali was terribly impressed with her Teh Tarik, which she said, tasted like as if she was drinking it. Her Nutella was rather nutty, with thick almond tones. Slacker's Horlicks tasted really malty, very breakfast-ty and his banana was quite incredible. The ice cream had brown streaks, most possibly due to the vestigal banana seeds being mashed during making the ice cream, prime example of natural made ice cream! My Apple Pie was fantastic too, it had huge chunks of pie crust in it, and the apple taste blended well with the cinnamon. Kahlua Latte was quite good, but not thick enough. On the other hand, Lattes aren't very rich anyway. On a side note, the mudpie is incredibly good too. Vanilla, Chocolate and coffee ice cream in an Oreo tasting crust. mmmm... Please whine as you view these pictures of them enjoying themselves.![]() This shop welcomes Hwachees as its main clientele, followed by other school students and the occasional couple. Its a perfect place to relax in a corner as the chairs provided are quite comfortable. What makes it click so well with students is that they even offer free photo printing services for your camera for photos taken in the shop, so that you can pin it up on a wall in it. Oh, and guys, the cute lady at the counter....erm...yea. Haha, see if you can catch her....she's kinda, OK never mind.Food: I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM, WE ALL SCREAM!!! Rich ice cream lovers of unique flavours will love this place. Please try the Mudpie too if you still have space after the ice cream. If you are thirsty, there's free flow of cold water for you cheapos. Ambience: 9/10 Perfect schooly cafe (they do serve coffee) perfect for chilllin out with friends. Cost: 7/10 slightly cheaper than most other ice cream parlours, and quite value for the money. $2.50 for 1 scoop, $4 for double, $8 for 500ml tub. Mudpie and baked Alaska are $4.80 a slice Location: 5/10 Located at the junction of Farrer and Dunearn road, near Adam road food centre. 174, 961, 67, 186 go near there, but please ask a Hwachee along for foolproof guidance... Address: 10 Jalan Serene, Serene Centre #01-05 Behind the McD man on the bench. Tel: 64688859 Operating Hours: Mon-Fri 12-9pm Sat 12-10pm Sun 2-7pm The Slack Man himself has shown, in his infinite wisdom, that he is the ultimate purveyor of all things nifty, spiffy, yummy, and generally interesting. He has personally reviewed this article and given his blessing. The submitter may be forgiven the sin of gluttony. Saturday, July 08, 2006 Campaigns Everyone knows Singapore loves having campaigns. When there is a social problem, the govt always sets up a committee, then they will discuss, then viola, a campaign is born! But, what about the success? Hehz.. So the Speak Chinese campaign has been on for years, and every year, MOE reiterates the importance of chinese, maybe not just chinese but mother tongue as a whole. What a farce! Principal of River Valley ruled that chinese exam results be not taken into account during exams?! So this effectively hints that chinese is not important, whether or not she means it. If you can, click the picture and read the article...Now now, she says, it's because chinese students who take higher chinese have to take both higher and normal chinese papers, which forms no basis for comparison with those just taking normal chinese? Simply put, it's a statement to save her sad ass. Higher chinese students learn more, having higher chinese in addition to normal, so the basis for comparison is using their normal chinese and compare! Their being able to take higher chinese just illustrates a higher inclination to mother tongue. It should work the same for higher malay and indian. From inside sources, the indian principal apparently practices racial favouritism. She is said to have conducted extra lessons for indian students separately using school funds to hire private teachers....This chinese abolishment thing just illustrates this further. Anyway, naturally as native speakers, parents are shocked at the crazy principal's action and launched a petition to chinese papers. Somehow it wasn't highlighted to straits times....sigh... So you see? Pathetic results eh? If the Speak Mandarin campaign succeeded, she would have been stopped before she could carry out the lame directive.. Courtesy campaign? Poor Singa the useless lion. Looks like it's only capable of being a children's show mascot like Barney, but even Barney is more alive than the wooden block. This lion has kept the same old face, smile and low quality visage for the past...10? 15? years. Not bad, women should learn its secret technique to remain youthful. Maybe it did Botox. Anyway, poor lion failed in its duty to promote courtesy. Why? Because according to Readers' Digest, courtesy entails action such as holding doors open for people (whether you smile or not is inconsequential) and picking things up for people...As you may well know, Singaporeans live by example. we always follow the leaders. So Singa is always stuck there, as a cardboard cutout or stuck on somewhere, stationary. He doesn't go around opening doors and stuff like so, so that's why Singaporeans ranked so low...We mimicked Singa...Awww. When people drop things, we stand there and smile. When people with hands full of stuff try to open the door, we stand at a side and smile as per Singa! yea. Campaign for 4000000 smiles for the IMF and world bank meeting? hmm...We do smile, as i have mentioned above. Oh just look at me, ain't i smiling a lot too? But, as Mr Brown has so creatively shown. 4000000 smiles together can be intimidating....abnormal... Basically, smiling has a few types. One is to show happiness, another to show a hidden agenda, often sinister. Either way, imagine 4 mil people being happy at the same time, 4 mil people having certain agendas on you at the same time...I scared. Astute observers would have already realised that most people on the streets DO NOT SMILE at no one in particular. Take a bus and smile for the whole ride. Enter the lift last and SMILE at everyone inside. Flash huge smiles at everyone you see in the toilet. Walk past the police station and smile joyfully at the police (more likely you'd be arrested for abnormal conduct) Smile while you are eating. SMILE. SMILE. SMILE. The government is watching you. Thursday, July 06, 2006 日本テレビ番組は おもしれえーー!トリビアの泉 すごい!どら猫の口と歯は人間より強い!ところで、あの魚たちが俺におなかを空かせた・・・刺身を食べたい!!! the video says that if your write あ too fast, your brain undergoes a "slip"because of the similarity of the character with お and instructs the hand to write お instead. The first guy quit because he was scared by the 10 extinguisher failure.. the last guy said that he wanted to fulfil his dream of flying....(^ ^) RamlY Burger!!! RamlY burger comes to Tiong Bahru. This would be the second location that i had this fabulous little unhealthy stuff. RamlY burgers differ from stall to stall, because it is not unfair to say that half the taste of this burger comes from the various and generous quantities of sauces used. When one buys the burger, the default is actually Burger RamlY Special. BRS is made like this. First, you choose your patty, beef, chicken or fish. The beef is the highlight of the three, naturally, since the RamlY company came to fame by producing its beef patties. This 6-7cm wide patty is then grilled on the hot plate, something which looks like the one used in teppanyaki, with some butter. Then the bun halves are also lightly grilled with margarine on the inner side. At this point is where different stalls differ. The one i had had curry powder, maggi seasoning sprinkled on it. The mat guy then cut the patty into half horizontally and grilled the insides, before using the two halves to sandwich a piece of cheese. Then he broke and egg and spread it out into a large circle on the plate, letting one side cook. The beef patty is then put in the center, and mayonnaise and sweet chili sauce is added. He then wrapped up the patty using the egg, which was not fully solid, and after sandwiching it between the bun halves, it is ready for enjoyment. Oh just look at the beef patty peeking out from the egg, which is still slightly liquid, and the cheese peeking out from between the beef! The beef patty is juicy, unlike McD's hard and dry ones, and the sauces complement each other so well. This one had a slightly indian flavour due to the curry powder, and the mat in me asks for more!I know some of you skeptics might be questioning my sense of taste and think that i exaggerate, but it's quite nice to try something simple yet wholesome and unhealthy once in a while... Food: takeaway fulfilling snack worth a try, better than McD! Cost: 10/10 who can't afford this? one burger comes at $2.50 - $3 Location: 1/10 relies on luck. You can only find this at pasar malams cos this is supposedly BANNED! |
