Sunday, May 25, 2008 NZ Ohrin Anybody who has tasted Japanese apples will never see apples in the same way again. Sadly, one of those apples can easily buy you a proper meal. My only experience was buying a Japanese Ohrin when it was on an offer, and even then it costed $3. But the flavour was just lovely. Cute and sweet. Rarely can you taste cuteness in an apple! So imagine my delight when I saw the word 'Ohrin' in NTUC, at 5 for $2.65. That day, i was waiting for friends before my night cycling. Couldn't resist missing the chance, so i bought one to try. These apples give a moderate crunch, not as crunchy as the Pacific nor NZ Roses, but still crunchy enough for me. They're not as juicy as Fujis, but the juice and the taste are well, amazing. When you taste it, the first thing that hits you is a very lovely sweetness, dissimilar to putting sugar in your mouth. It is a refreshing yet very sweet taste that wins over most apples. A true dessert apple. The sweetness has lilting notes of apple aroma, and there's not a single bit of sourness or tartness, just mellow sweetness. Somehow, i tend to describe the taste as cute. The skin is of moderate thickness, but not as tough as Granny Smiths. Having not much of a taste, I don't think the skin will put children off. Either way, my only recommendation for this apple is: get it. Tip: I wonder how sweet apple juice will taste when made from these... Availability: Should be seasonal, most likely for the summer months, May, June, July. Supermarket: NTUC stocks it, but the other supermarts don't seem to Sold as: $2.65 for 5. More expensive than the usual apples, but still plenty manageable! Wow Factor: 8/10 My current favourite apple! Tuesday, May 13, 2008 Yong Xiang Xing Yong Tau Foo 永祥兴豆腐 This stall has always been a favourite since my childhood days. Having survived for decades, this stall still dishes out one of the most popular yong tau foo in the country, good enough to justify some old aunties everyday waiting in front of the stall every morning till they open at around 1-2pm. They will invariably form the head of the queue that will stretch almost to the opposite side of the hawker centre. The queue moves quite fast though, and they do serve it to your table, so do make some time to queue and don't be too intimidated. This is a must try! Unlike other yong tau foo stalls, this place has no noodles, no rice and no 'one piece at $0.50'. There is only one size, and in this $3 bowl, you get 2 handmade fishballs, 2 tauhu with mince fish and meat on top, two fried versions of the tauhu and three taukee filled with that same filling. The soup is quite tasty yet light, with a mild sweetness and a gentle aroma. I thought i tasted MSG, but according to my dad, the stall claims to not use MSG. Hmm, someone taste and tell me? Anyway, while some people love the soup, I prefer the ingredients. The fishballs are like 'gentle maidens'. They put up a little fight to tease you and then yield to your teeth. Just nicely bouncy and with a very prominent taste of fresh fish. You can tell it's handmade because the fishball surface is rough! Tauhu is quite dense, and the fish and meat topping is really fresh and tasty. The fried one scores even more for not being oily, yet with that aromatic fried outer skin providing a different experience. My favourite is the Taukee, with a savoury fried beancurd skin and the same tasy filling. What is nice about it is the way it traps some soup within, so every bite has a small burst of soup mingling with the flavours of the taukee! One note of caution is that one bowl is rarely filling. Supplement it with something else from the other stalls or order two bowls! Food: Very tasy handmade yong tau foo that does brisk business from opening till closing. Cost: 6/10 I have to admit that $3.50 is a little steep for these. It used to be $3 Location: 7/10 The hawker centre next to Chinatown OG department store. Look for the crazy queue. Address: #01-1084 People's Park Food Centre Sheng Yi Fa Lor Mee 生益发小吃 卤面 After an intense exercise session in the morning, we were all famished. ZW recommended this lor mee stall at Clementi. Lor mee was never on my menu list for years ever since a horrible childhood encounter, so it was rather miraculous that i yielded to his praises about this stall's ware and decided to risk my childhood nightmare. The stall is located in a small kopitiam tucked under a HDB apartment opposite the NTUC at Clementi central, separated by the main road with the MRT line. The stall itself is small but had a small queue that day we went. The hungry ZW and I opted for the large bowl at $3 while Jack took the $2.50 bowl. ![]() The dish came giving out a very savoury aroma. I recommend adding a half spoonful of vinegar and mixing in everything. The gravy was really tasty. It wasn't very starchy, just about the consistency of chowder, which made it really suitable to go with the noodles. The vinegar made it even more appetising, and the chilli gave a nice punch to a tasty and flavourful gravy. Noodles were cooked perfectly, with a good texture and bite. The ingredients included some crispy stuff (don't know what it's called) which went well with the gravy, ngoh hiang and two fried dumplings. The ingredients were not much of a highlight. It was the gravy that really captured my attention. In fact it was so good that ZW and I had two bowls each. Flavourful but not too strong, the gravy won't sicken you even after two bowls. Food: Cheap and good Lor Mee. A very nice re-entry into my life! Cost: 9.5/10 cheap hawker fare. Good value as well Location: 5.5/10 Clementi central is easy enough, but to get here you need to find the HDB block Ambience: Quiet lazy kopitiam.
