    Vittles
It's been a fantastic 6 months with the missus, and to celebrate this a little, i brought her to Vittles at Sembawang, near Chong Pang military camp, for dinner.

Vittles has an easy vibrant decoration of mainly green, white and orange, and being located so out of the way, it has a rather limited clientele even at dinner time. Maybe it's because we came on a weekday. And NS men frequent this place too, since two camps are nearby. Menu is quite sufficient and many of the offerings seem interesting. I came specifically for the Moo Moo II burger ($12.90), and the missus had the Parmesan Coated Fish Fillet ($11.90). Payment is different from the usual restaurant, and much like an Indonesian eatery instead. You fill up your order on a chit and pay at the counter ( NO GST nor Svc Charge!!!) and then u wait.

The missus dory fillet was not your usual fish and chips. Coated with parmesan cheese and bread crumbs, the coating was crispy. It was a little oily but the oil was fresh and doesn't put me off. The parmesan added another level to the flavour, giving the coating a tasty savouriness and cheesiness that was indeed that of parmesan. She also commented that the fish had absorbed the flavour from the coating, making the fish very delicious. I found the dory fillet fresh as well. The dish was paired with 2 sides, gratinised potato and salad. The gratin was pretty good, and the missus liked it pretty much too.

The Moo Moo II burger doesn't look imposing but that's a wrong conclusion to make. Between the oatmeal crusted bun lies a huge beef patty (could be more than a quarter pounder). On top of this patty lays a few bacon strips, then some sauteed cremini mushroom slices and topped off with a slice of cheese. The whole meat party sites on some vegetables topped with bbq sauce. The patty was really thick, about 2cm. It has a nicely accentuated beef flavour and the taste of pepper and salt comes through subtly and sufficiently. Unlike other patties, this patty is not too fine, providing some bite and texture. My only complaint was that it's a little dry. Maybe i'll ask the chef to not cook it as long next time. The bacon strips were aromatic. Fried till crispy but not hard and biscuit-like, they brought another dimension of meaty flavour to the burger. The mushrooms were bouncy and tasty. Creminis have a natural earthy and meaty flavour which complemented the patty darn well too. Lastly, the sauce was tangy and slightly spicy. Good sauce, but it could be toned down so as not to eclipse the patty.

Vittles also has free sweet popcorn for your enjoyment, but this is nothing much although it's a nice gesture they should keep. The restaurant serves food of good standard and for a good price as well. It's a pity it's so far from my house!

    Sushi Tei

I have heard much about how if you visit Sushi Tei you will never want to step into Sakae anymore. Many lauded the taste and quality of the food, so i was excited when i finally found the chance to come here for dinner with the missus and her mum.

We started off the meal with sushi, this being Sushi Tei anyway. Kajiki (swordfish) nigiri on the right and a california maki with unagi on the left. The kajiki was fresh, and chewing brought out the fragrant fattiness along with a subtle sweetness. The shari (sushi rice) was delicately vinegared and was tasty. California maki was a tad boring to me. I never really like makizushi anyway. The unagi was tasty though.

Next up we had the Seafood Salad dressed with Sushi Tei's own dressing. The vegetables used were a tad boring; the usual iceberg lettuce, some cucumbers etc, but the seafood was excellent. Fresh and sweet prawns, thick and bouncy tako, and some tarabagani (king crab) that was deliciously sweet and flavoursome. The dressing itself was also pretty good, zesty and appetising.

The missus wanted noodles, so i decided on Yaki Udon for her. Contrary to my expectations, the udon had significant wok hei, making the dish fragrant and very inviting. In addition to the savoury taste of the noodles, there were tender pork slices and a generous serving of vegetables, all with fragrant flavours from the condiments.

As for me, i ordered the season's promotion of Chuutoro Kaminabe with miso soup base. The soup was very tasty, with extra flavours from the mirin and the chuutoro imparted a fragrant fatty flavour to the soup. Although the tuna cubes made the soup delicious, I'm not sure what to comment about the chuutoro. It was fatty and tender, and the fat was really tasty but the fishiness was something i did not expect on my first encounter with chuutoro. We asked the waiter to tell the chef and he came back saying this is the usual taste...Anyone can enlighten me on this?

All in all, I'm still not very sure what to make of Sushi Tei. The sushi does impress, but the bowl of rice i ordered was a tad dry and hard. Chuutoro was a riddle, although the rest of the seafood was good. Hmm.

Food: it is better than Sakae, but the price is higher, and how much better I cannot confirm.

Cost: 6/10 I'm not very keen about the pricing. Some things ought to be cheaper, for example the rice.

Ambience: Cozy but a little too dim for my liking. I visited the Raffles City branch

Location: Various locations, most are very accessible, such as Ngee Ann City and Raffles City

Address: 252 North Bridge Road #03-13/14 Raffles City Shopping Centre Singapore 179103
